Dubai is making daily commutes easier by opening two new bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project. These new bridges are expected to cut travel times by up to 70%, making life easier for thousands of drivers.
Traffic Problems at Key Intersections
As Dubai grows, its roads are becoming more congested. The intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road has been a major traffic hotspot, especially during rush hours.
Frustrating Delays
Commuters traveling to and from areas like Al Qusais, Deira, Jebel Ali, and Dubai Production City have faced long delays. With more people moving to Dubai, these delays have been getting worse, wasting both time and productivity.
New Bridges to the Rescue
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched the Garn Al Sabkha Intersection Improvement Project to tackle this issue. Two new two-lane bridges are now open and already making a big difference.
- Bridge 1: Spanning 601 meters, this bridge handles 3,200 vehicles per hour, easing eastward traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
- Bridge 2: At 664 meters long, this bridge manages traffic heading south from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port, reducing traffic jams.
But the improvements don’t end here. A third bridge is set to open in October, connecting Garn Al Sabkha Street to Al Asayel Street. This bridge, which is 943 meters long and can handle 8,000 vehicles per hour, will ensure smoother travel between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, completing the project’s vision.
Reduced Journey Times
The new bridges are already showing great results. Travel time from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road is expected to drop from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes—a 40% reduction. For trips towards Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali, the time has decreased by 70%, cutting a 21-minute trip to just 7 minutes.
The project is nearly complete, with 97% finished. It will eventually include a total of four bridges stretching 2,874 meters. These new routes will handle 17,600 vehicles per hour, further easing traffic on some of Dubai’s busiest roads.
In addition to the bridges, the project also upgrades road surfaces, stormwater drainage, traffic signals, and irrigation networks. These improvements will help Dubai’s roads keep up with future traffic demands and support the city’s rapid growth.
A Roadmap to Efficiency
The new bridges are part of Dubai’s larger plan to improve its transportation network and support long-term development. By reducing travel times and enhancing road efficiency, this project not only improves the daily commute but also boosts Dubai’s status as a leader in innovation and infrastructure.
With the final bridge opening soon, Dubai’s roads will better handle growth and ensure smoother commutes.
