Dubai is set to unveil transformative urban mobility initiatives under a Dhs16 billion plan aimed at modernizing city infrastructure and reducing congestion. Guided by Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the plan focuses on pioneering a trackless tram system, expanding current transport networks, and upgrading major roads to support a growing, connected city. With state-of-the-art technology and a commitment to sustainability, Dubai’s vision combines efficiency,
eco-friendliness, and innovation.
An Eco-Friendly and Cost-Effective Trackless Tram Solution
One of the groundbreaking elements of this plan is the introduction of a trackless tram—a revolutionary, autonomous tram system that operates without traditional rail tracks. Using camera-guided virtual lanes painted along dedicated routes, this tram combines innovation with eco-conscious design, aiming to alleviate congestion while lowering environmental impact. Its electric power source and design make it cost-effective and quicker to deploy than standard tram lines, aligning with Dubai’s commitment to sustainable transport.

Each tram features three interconnected carriages that can accommodate up to 300 passengers and achieve speeds up to 70 km/h, perfect for busy city commutes. Equipped to travel up to 100 kilometers per charge, this modern transport solution offers a cleaner, faster, and more efficient alternative for city transit, promising a seamless urban travel experience.
Expanding the Dubai Tram Network: 10 Years of Reliable Service
The trackless tram initiative comes as the current Dubai Tram network nears its 10th anniversary. Since its launch, Dubai Tram has consistently proven to be a reliable transit solution with 950,000 journeys and 60 million passengers served. The new expansion plans underscore Sheikh Hamdan’s long-term vision to make public transportation convenient and accessible, especially as Dubai continues to grow.
Ambitious Road Development Projects Set to Revolutionize City Traffic Flow
Beyond the tram expansion, Sheikh Hamdan’s ambitious “Main Roads Development Plan 2024-2027” includes comprehensive upgrades to major Dubai roads. For instance, the Latifa bint Hamdan Street development project, commencing in 2025, will extend for 12.2 kilometers, adding capacity for 16,000 vehicles per hour. Similarly, the Meydan Road project will support 22,000 vehicles per hour, serving around one million residents while slashing travel times significantly.
Another key project includes the Al Mustaqbal Street upgrade, designed to increase capacity by 30% and improve traffic flow. These enhancements will significantly cut commute times, improve road safety, and accommodate an ever-growing number of residents and tourists.
Smart Technology for Enhanced Public Transit Efficiency
These transport advancements extend beyond infrastructure. Sheikh Hamdan’s development strategy also encompasses dedicated bus and taxi lanes, along with smart transport solutions that leverage artificial intelligence to improve service reliability. Plans to introduce autonomous buses and extend dedicated transit lanes support Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030, promoting seamless and efficient public transportation across the city.
Transforming Dubai into a Global Leader in Sustainable Urban Transport
As Dubai implements these comprehensive road and transport projects, the city is set to position itself as a global leader in sustainable, future-ready urban mobility. The strategic focus on cost-effective, efficient, and eco-friendly transport solutions aligns with Dubai’s commitment to meeting the needs of a modern, growing metropolis. This visionary initiative promises to provide residents and visitors with a convenient, state-of-the-art transit experience that reflects Dubai’s forward-thinking approach to urban development.
