Dubai’s RTA Expands Intelligent Transport System with Phase II

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is moving forward with Phase II of its Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Project. This phase aims to cover 100% of Dubai’s main roads with advanced traffic monitoring by 2026, expanding from the current 60% coverage.

Expanding Road Coverage

RTA’s expansion will increase the ITS coverage from 480km to 710km of roads. This enhancement will improve the management of the road network and ensure smoother traffic flow. Real-time information about road conditions will be made available to the public through new Variable Message Signs (VMS) and smart applications, helping to distribute traffic more effectively.

Utilizing Advanced Technologies

The ITS infrastructure is designed to meet both current and future transportation needs. It integrates artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced communication technologies. These innovations will support smart services and self-driving transport solutions, showcasing Dubai’s commitment to modernizing its transportation network.

Successful Initial Phase

In the first phase of the ITS Project, the RTA installed 116 new traffic cameras and 100 incident detection devices, bringing the totals to 311 cameras and 227 devices. Additional installations included 112 variable message signs, 115 travel time sensors, 17 weather stations, and over 820km of fiber optic cable. These measures led to a 63% improvement in incident detection, a 30% reduction in response times, and a 20% decrease in journey times.

Centralized Traffic Management

The Intelligent Transport Centre in Al Barsha oversees Dubai’s traffic using these advanced systems. The integration of various monitoring devices helps manage traffic efficiently, ensuring a smooth and safe driving experience for all road users.

dubai’s Commitment to Innovation

Dubai’s RTA is dedicated to enhancing urban mobility through the use of advanced technologies. This expansion of the ITS Project not only improves traffic management but also positions Dubai as a leader in intelligent transport systems globally. The continuous development in this field underscores the city’s commitment to providing a world-class transportation network for its residents and visitors.

By adopting these innovative solutions, Dubai is setting new road safety and traffic management standards, ensuring a more efficient and enjoyable travel experience for everyone.
