Dubai is taking a unique stride in city planning as the Dubai Road Naming Committee invites residents to lend their creativity to the nomenclature of new roads. This forward-thinking initiative, announced on Tuesday, is set to redefine how we navigate the city, blending heritage, identity, and futuristic visions into the very fabric of Dubai’s roads.
A Blend of Functionality and Distinctiveness
Under the guidance of Dawoud Al Hajri, the Director General of Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, the city is adopting a novel road naming system that harmonizes names with numbers. The goal is to simplify navigation for both residents and visitors, making it not only functional but also infused with the unique essence of Dubai.

Names Woven into Urban Development
Breaking new ground, the Dubai Road Naming Committee is introducing the inclusion of names in the process of designating land use and developmental projects for different sectors and regions. This move aims to tell a story unique to each area, giving a voice to the city’s diverse character.
Dubai Roads: From Local Flora to Street Names
The first phase of this transformative initiative saw roads in the Al Khawaneej 2 area receiving names inspired by local trees and flowers. Al Ghaf Street, for example, takes its name from the Ghaf tree indigenous to the region, linking the first and second Khawaneej areas. Other streets like Al Sidr, Basil, Al Faggy, Al Samr, and Al Sharish echo the botanical richness of the area.
A Sophisticated Approach to Naming
What sets this initiative apart is the Committee’s commitment to a sophisticated methodology. The naming process now includes elements such as roadside signs and features specific to each site, enhancing visitors’ connection to the location while facilitating easy navigation.
Residents as Co-Creators
In a noteworthy move, the Dubai Road Naming Committee is actively seeking public participation. Residents are not mere spectators but are encouraged to suggest names for roads, fostering a sense of community involvement. While Al Khawaneej 2 was the starting point, upcoming phases promise broader community engagement, ensuring residents play a pivotal role in shaping the city’s identity.
Committee Composition and Focus
Established by the Executive Council Decision No. 35 of 2021, the Dubai Road Naming Committee comprises representatives from Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre. Additionally, four representatives with specialized experience contribute their expertise to the Committee, focusing on identifying roads requiring names, suggesting options, and reviewing earlier names.
Navigating Dubai’s Past, Present, and Future
This road-naming initiative is more than just about getting from point A to B. It’s a symbolic endeavor to weave the past, present, and future of Dubai into its very streets. As the city propels itself forward, these roads won’t just guide; they will narrate the rich heritage, culture, and aspirations of Dubai.
