Dubai Police Warn Parents: Physical Punishment Is Not Discipline

UAE authorities urge families to shift from punishment to communication, highlighting long-term psychological risks for children.

In a strong message to families across the UAE, Dubai Police have advised parents to avoid physical punishment, stressing that it does more harm than good. Speaking on a recent podcast, Brigadier Mohammed Al Matrooshi highlighted how hitting or harsh discipline can leave lasting emotional scars and increase a child’s vulnerability to harmful influences.

The advisory comes in line with the UAE’s growing focus on child protection, reinforced by updated domestic violence laws and community awareness initiatives.

Why Physical Punishment Can Cause Long-Term Harm

According to Al Matrooshi, the idea that strict or physical discipline builds stronger individuals is outdated and incorrect. Children who are exposed to violence at home are more likely to develop anxiety, aggression, or emotional withdrawal.

He explained that in many cases, children may start seeking validation and support outside the home, which can expose them to negative environments. What may begin as a “discipline method” can gradually affect a child’s confidence, relationships, and mental well-being.

Even verbal abuse, often overlooked, can have strong psychological effects. Simple words spoken in anger can stay with a child for years, shaping their behaviour and emotional responses.

Early Signs of Abuse Parents Should Not Ignore

Child abuse does not always present itself in obvious ways. Authorities say the warning signs are often subtle and easy to miss.

Children may become unusually quiet, show signs of sadness, or display sudden behavioural changes. In some cases, they may struggle at school or avoid social interaction altogether.

Al Matrooshi emphasised that recognising these early signs can prevent situations from escalating. Addressing issues through calm conversations and emotional support can make a significant difference in a child’s development.

A Different Approach: Dialogue Over Discipline

Dubai Police are encouraging parents to adopt a more balanced and understanding approach to parenting. Listening, engaging, and communicating with children are seen as far more effective than punishment.

“Sometimes, simply listening can solve major issues,” Al Matrooshi noted. Building trust within the family creates a safe space where children feel heard and supported.

This shift reflects a broader change in parenting culture across the UAE, where awareness around mental health and emotional well-being is steadily growing.

Schools and Community Play a Key Role

Child protection in the UAE is not limited to homes. Schools and community members are also part of the system.

Under Wadeema’s Law, educators are legally required to report any suspected abuse. Authorities have also made it clear that anyone who notices signs of harm must report it.

Dubai Police have introduced child-friendly tools to make reporting easier. These include digital platforms, virtual assistants, and even interactive educational games that teach children about their rights.

In some cases, specialists also analyse children’s drawings to identify emotional distress or trauma—an approach that reflects how seriously authorities are taking early intervention.

UAE Law Strengthens Protection for Families

The warning also aligns with the UAE’s updated legal framework. UAE Federal Law No. 13 of 2024 on Domestic Violence has introduced stricter measures to protect victims, including restraining orders and access to shelter and support services.

Authorities now work closely with social and judicial entities to ensure that victims—especially women and children—receive complete care, from immediate protection to long-term rehabilitation.

Importantly, cases are handled based on severity. While serious situations require firm legal action, less severe cases may involve counselling and family support to maintain stability at home.

Support Channels Made More Accessible

Understanding that not everyone feels comfortable visiting a police station, Dubai Police have introduced flexible reporting options. Victims can seek help confidentially and even request to meet officers in public or neutral spaces.

There are also dedicated services for women facing verbal, physical, or emotional abuse. These services ensure privacy while offering professional support.

This approach reflects a broader goal: protecting individuals without unnecessarily breaking families apart.

Prevention Starts at Home

At the heart of the message is a simple idea—prevention begins within families. Creating a safe and supportive environment at home can reduce the risk of abuse before it even starts.

Al Matrooshi stressed that awareness is the first line of defence. When parents choose communication over punishment, they contribute to a healthier and more secure society.

Dubai Police’s message is clear: discipline should not come at the cost of a child’s mental health. With stronger laws, improved reporting systems, and growing awareness, the UAE is taking firm steps to protect its younger population.

For parents, the shift is simple yet powerful—listen more, understand better, and create a safe space at home.
