Dubai begins electric bus trial packed with cutting-edge tech

The RTA begins testing a smart, zero-emission bus on a busy city route as part of its sustainability drive.

Dubai is advancing sustainable mobility with a trial run of its latest electric bus, featuring futuristic tech and zero emissions. Launched on April 16, 2025, the RTA is operating it on route F13, linking Al Quoz Bus Depot to key stops like Dubai Mall Metro and Burj Khalifa.

The trial marks a significant step toward the city’s goal of converting all public transport to zero-emission solutions by 2050.

A glimpse into the bus of the future

Unlike traditional public buses, the newly launched electric model features a suite of advanced technologies designed to enhance both the passenger experience and operational efficiency.

Among the standout features are:

  • High-definition onboard cameras for added safety
  • Smart screen systems to improve passenger communication
  • Heads-up display integrated into the windshield for drivers to view essential data without distraction
  • Enhanced air-conditioning systems, optimized for Dubai’s hot climate
  • Top speed of up to 370 km/h – though realistically governed for urban safety

These innovations aim to set a new benchmark for public transportation in the region, blending comfort, safety, and environmental responsibility.

A strategic push toward zero-emission public transport

The Dubai electric bus trial is more than just a tech upgrade—it’s a crucial component of the RTA’s long-term green mobility strategy. By 2050, Dubai aims to transition all public transport modes to zero-emission systems, aligning with broader UAE sustainability goals.

Marwan Al Zarooni, Director of Buses at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said the trial is designed to collect real-world data across several performance areas.

“Through this trial, RTA will monitor the environmental benefits of operating the electric bus within the Public Transport Agency’s fleet on a high-demand route with actual passengers,” he stated.

“The trial will assess the reduction in carbon emissions, the real-world range achieved on a full charge, and the vehicle’s ability to meet operational requirements under varying weather conditions—particularly during the summer months.”

This real-time data will help the authority evaluate how the bus performs in Dubai’s dynamic urban environment, especially during periods of extreme heat.

Prioritizing comfort, performance, and sustainability

Dubai’s transport infrastructure has seen rapid innovation in recent years, with RTA focusing not just on expansion, but also on intelligent upgrades. The electric bus trial ties into broader plans that include:

  • Fleet expansion with greener vehicles
  • Adoption of digital technologies across transport services
  • Customer-first initiatives to ensure comfort, safety, and accessibility

Al Zarooni emphasized the RTA’s vision to not only keep up with urban growth but also redefine the passenger journey.

“Our investments in fleet expansion, technology advancement, and infrastructure upgrades reflect our commitment to meeting the growing demand for public bus services, while enhancing service reliability and elevating the customer experience,” he added.

“We remain dedicated to providing sustainable, efficient transport services that prioritise comfort and satisfaction for all users.”

Why route F13?

Route F13 is one of the busiest feeder lines in the city, making it a practical testing ground for new technology. Connecting high-footfall areas like the Dubai Mall and nearby metro stations, the route is ideal for evaluating how the electric bus performs under pressure—from frequent stops to fluctuating passenger loads and heavy traffic.

By operating on this high-demand corridor, RTA can assess how well the electric vehicle adapts to urban realities while providing an uninterrupted, quality experience for daily commuters and tourists alike.

What this means for Dubai residents

The trial signals more than a potential fleet upgrade—it reflects a shift in how Dubai envisions its future mobility landscape. For residents and visitors, it promises:

  • Quieter, cleaner, and smoother rides
  • Better onboard information and connectivity
  • Enhanced reliability and safety features

Moreover, as Dubai continues to lead the region in sustainability and smart city innovation, public transport users can expect a significant transformation in their daily commutes.

Is this the new normal?

If successful, this pilot project could pave the way for a fleet-wide overhaul of Dubai’s bus system. By integrating electric vehicles, the city moves closer to its zero-emission targets while positioning itself at the forefront of global public transport innovation.

The RTA’s electric bus trial reinforces its progressive, people-centric approach, alongside innovations like contactless fares and account-based ticketing.
