Dubai Unveils World’s First 3D-Printed Electric Abra

RTA tests the first 3D-printed electric abra

Dubai is taking a big step in innovation by introducing the world’s first 3D-printed electric abra. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is leading this project to modernize the city’s water transport while supporting Dubai’s 3D printing strategy.

Mixing Tradition with Technology

The new 3D-printed abra is a modern twist on Dubai’s traditional water taxis. It can carry 20 passengers and was designed to keep the classic abra look. The RTA worked with private companies to make sure this abra is both high-quality and efficient.

Focus on Efficiency and Sustainability

A key goal of this project is to make manufacturing and operations more efficient. Using 3D printing technology, the RTA has cut manufacturing time by 90% and reduced costs by 30%. This approach also lowers operation and maintenance expenses by 30%, making the project more sustainable.

The abra is 11 meters long and 3.1 meters wide, featuring the longest structure created with 3D printing in this field. It runs on an electric propulsion system with two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries, highlighting Dubai’s commitment to eco-friendly transport.

Supporting Dubai’s Environmental Goals

The trial run of the electric abra is a significant part of RTA’s plan to boost marine transport services. Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s Director General, emphasized the project’s importance in reaching Dubai’s sustainability goals. He stated, “The trial operation of the electric abra manufactured using 3D printing technology, along with the improvement of traditional abra stations project, is part of RTA’s master plan to enhance marine transport services.” This initiative aims to enhance safety, security, and service standards across the city’s waterways.

Collaborating with Global Experts

The 3D-printed abra is a result of teamwork with global companies. Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi built the abra using materials from Mitsubishi of Japan. Siemens of Germany handled the programming and calibration of the printer, while Torqeedo of Germany supplied the electric motors. TASNEEF Company supervised the manufacturing to ensure safety standards were met.

Upgrading Traditional Abra Stations

The RTA is also upgrading traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek. These stations are used by over 14 million passengers each year. The project aims to boost safety, security, and accessibility, meeting the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination and improving the overall look of the stations.

In early 2023, the RTA upgraded the Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station. The Deira Old Souq Station followed in February 2024. Improvements for the Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station will be completed by August 2025. These upgrades include new floating docks for safety, better customer service areas, employee facilities, and bike racks for better transport integration.

Electric abra: Promising a Sustainable Future

This project uses sustainable, low-cost materials to reduce annual maintenance costs by 10%. Other upgrades include expanding passenger waiting areas, providing priority seating and spaces for People of Determination, and increasing compliance with the Dubai Code by 87%.

Dubai’s launch of the world’s first 3D-printed electric abra marks a new era in the city’s marine transport sector. This innovative project improves efficiency, reduces costs, and supports Dubai’s environmental sustainability goals. With ongoing upgrades to traditional abra stations, the future of Dubai’s marine transport looks promising, offering better safety, accessibility, and service for millions of passengers.

By combining tradition with modern technology, Dubai sets a new standard in sustainable and innovative transport solutions, ensuring that the city’s waterways remain a vital part of its infrastructure.
