In a significant leap towards celebrating the rich tapestry of design initiatives in AlUla, the Design Space AlUla is set to open its doors in February 2024. Positioned as the inaugural permanent gallery space dedicated to showcasing design endeavors across AlUla, this dynamic and inclusive hub will play a pivotal role in fostering collaboration across the entire design spectrum.
Nestled within the vibrant AlJadidah Arts District, Design Space AlUla stands as a testament to AlUla’s commitment to becoming a global design influencer. This innovative space, designed to promote collaboration among design professionals, students, and enthusiasts, is poised to reinforce AlUla’s legacy as a catalyst for creative inspiration and design within the cultural sphere.
Design Space AlUla – Architectural Marvel at the Core of Creativity
The contemporary corten steel, glass, and polished concrete structure, designed by Giò Forma Studio, pays homage to the iconic breezeblock architecture of the AlJadidah Arts District. Shaped around a luminous plaza, the building’s intricate lattice façade not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also ensures ample natural light and ventilation throughout.
Inaugural Exhibition: Mawrid – Celebrating Inspired Design
Design Space AlUla will kick off its journey with the inaugural exhibition, “Mawrid: Celebrating Inspired Design,” curated by Sara Ghani. This exhibition unravels the design thinking process behind ten recent AlUla-inspired projects spanning architecture, urban planning, and design. From the awe-inspiring mirror-clad Maraya to the renovation plans for Madrasat Addeera, each project reflects a deep connection to AlUla’s natural and cultural landscape.
A Glimpse into the Design Community’s Diversity
The exhibition also showcases projects from the AlUla Design Award finalists, including Imane Mellah, Teeb, Sara Kanoo, and Shaddah Studio. Additionally, the first edition of the AlUla Design Residency brings together designers and experts from Bahrain, Denmark, France, India, and Saudi Arabia, fostering collaboration across diverse disciplines.
Building a Living Compendium of Design Inspiration
Design Space AlUla not only aims to showcase current design initiatives but also to build a living compendium through its archive. The archive, a repository of design inspiration, will also serve as a resource for aspiring designers in AlUla’s resident community.
Towards a Sustainable Design Future
Sara Ghani, the curator of Design Space AlUla, expressed the vision behind the space, stating, “Design Space AlUla commits to celebrating AlUla’s natural history, its cultural heritage, and vernacular materials – inspiring sustainable futures that are rooted in place.”
As visitors explore the Design Space AlUla during the AlUla Arts Festival, they will witness the convergence of tradition and innovation, providing a glimpse into the future of design in this culturally rich region. The gallery stands as a beacon, inviting designers, enthusiasts, and the curious to delve into the intricate world of AlUla-inspired creativity.
In time, as these projects become part of the Design Space AlUla archive, the gallery is set to evolve into a testament to AlUla’s continuous journey of creativity, leaving an indelible mark on the global design landscape.
