Remember Dangal? The mega-blockbuster that had us all cheering for India’s wrestling champs and made over ?2000 crores at the global box office! Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and co-produced by Aamir Khan, this 2016 film was a cinematic masterpiece based on the inspiring story of the Phogat family. While the film raked in some serious cash bags, wrestler Babita Phogat recently revealed that the family’s share from this jackpot wasn’t exactly a golden medal.
Babita Phogat Drops a Truth Bomb About Dangal Profits
In a candid chat with News 24, Babita Phogat – who’s not just a wrestling champ but also a politician revealed the profits they bagged from the movie. When asked about how much their family received for selling the rights to their story, she revealed that they got about ?1 crore. A measly ?1 crore out of the film’s mind-boggling ?2000 crore earnings! She broke down the math, explaining that they initially agreed to a deal before Aamir even came on board, and it wasn’t even 1% of the film’s massive revenue.
It Wasn’t About the Money for the Phogats
Babita made it clear that, for her family, respect and love from the audience were worth more than any paycheck. She quoted her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, saying, “We want people’s respect and love. Leave everything else.” Dangal didn’t just make bank, it made icons out of the Phogat sisters, bringing their real-life struggles and triumphs to the silver screen.
Interestingly, Babita also shared that when Aamir’s team first pitched the film, they suggested changing the characters’ names. But her father wasn’t having it. Mahavir insisted that their real names stay in the script. After all, why hide the real heroes behind fictional identities, right?
Babita also revealed that her father proposed the idea of starting a wrestling academy in Haryana with some of the film’s profits. However, the idea didn’t go beyond the discussion table, leaving many fans wondering what could’ve been.
The Dangal Legacy
For those who need a quick refresher, Dangal wasn’t just a film; it was an experience that redefined sports films in Bollywood. Aamir Khan took on the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, the gritty yet loving father who trained his daughters to become wrestling champions. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Zaira Wasim played Geeta Phogat, while Sanya Malhotra and Suhani Bhatnagar portrayed Babita Phogat. Sakshi Tanwar added a heartfelt touch as their mother.
This isn’t just one of Bollywood’s highest-grossing films; it’s a story that has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema and inspired countless people to chase their dreams, no matter the odds.
Now, whether or not ?1 crore was fair compensation is up for debate. But one thing’s for sure—the Phogat family’s journey will always be worth more than any box office number.
