Dubai has added another first to its list of pioneering sustainability efforts with the launch of the Centre for Species Survival – Fungi (CSS Fungi) at Terra Pavilion in Expo City. The innovative centre is the first of its kind worldwide, dedicated solely to studying and protecting fungi species—marking a significant step forward in biodiversity preservation and ecological education.
Importance of fungi in the world of conservation
Fungi play a key role in nutrient cycling, soil health, carbon storage, and even potential medicine—making ecosystems more resilient.
The initiative aims to address this gap by launching scientific assessments of fungi species, starting with those native to the region. It will contribute valuable data to global biodiversity research, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List, with which the centre is actively collaborating.
CSS Fungi: A UAE-first with global significance
Set within the sustainability-themed Terra Pavilion, the CSS Fungi positions Dubai as a leader in environmental innovation. The centre’s primary mission is to evaluate extinction risks and build a comprehensive database of regional fungi species. This marks a strategic shift from traditional wildlife-focused conservation efforts to a broader, ecosystem-wide approach.
The launch supports UAE’s green goals and highlights its rising influence in global climate talks.
Terra to host the family-friendly Enchanted Forest Festival
Expo City’s Enchanted Forest Festival on 28–29 June offers a fun, immersive dive into the world of fungi.
Here’s what visitors can expect at the festival:
- Interactive forest-themed installations
- Guided storytelling sessions
- Face painting and craft workshops for children
- Photo ops with a mushroom mascot
- Educational talks and tours of the CSS Fungi
- Sustainable food options and entertainment
Tickets are priced at AED 50 for adults, while children under 12 can attend free of charge. Families are encouraged to book their spots in advance through Expo City’s official channels, as the event is expected to draw significant local interest.
Terra’s commitment to education and sustainability
The Enchanted Forest Festival and CSS Fungi work in tandem to deliver more than just entertainment—they offer learning experiences that spark curiosity and appreciation for the natural world. Visitors gain fresh insights into how fungi fight climate change, support plants, and balance ecosystems.
Terra Pavilion continues to serve as a powerful educational platform in Dubai, bridging the gap between science and the community. Focusing on fungi, the pavilion deepens its sustainability story and inspires eco-awareness in residents and visitors.
The UAE’s expanding role in global conservation
The establishment of the CSS Fungi supports the UAE’s larger environmental strategy, which includes protecting desert habitats, restoring mangroves, and now, recognising the critical role of fungi. Dubai’s work with groups like the IUCN helps protect native species and advance global biodiversity goals.
This initiative helps spotlight fungi, expanding their role in science and public awareness.
