Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Emaar Properties, has announced a significant upgrade to the Burj Khalifa–Dubai Mall Metro Station. The development aims to accommodate a growing number of commuters heading to Downtown Dubai—particularly to hotspots like Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, and the surrounding business and leisure districts.
This expansion will see the station’s area increase from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres and boost its hourly capacity by 65%, rising from 7,250 to 12,320 passengers. Once complete, the station will serve up to 220,000 daily, especially during peak events like New Year’s Eve.
Necessity of Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall metro expansion
Dubai Metro has consistently seen rising ridership year after year, with Downtown Dubai being one of its most in-demand destinations. According to RTA data, station usage in this area is growing at an annual rate of 7.5%, driven by tourism, commercial growth, and residential developments nearby.
The new station upgrade is designed to meet this demand head-on, ensuring that commuters experience less congestion, faster transit, and more seamless access to key Downtown attractions.
Key features of the station upgrade

Expanded station footprint
The station’s total area will grow from 6,700 square metres to 8,500 square metres, allowing for broader concourse areas, longer platforms, and greater spatial efficiency for large volumes of passengers.
Enhanced entry and exit flow
The upgraded layout includes the addition of multiple entrance and exit points, new fare-gate areas, and dedicated escalators and lifts to streamline passenger movement and reduce bottlenecks.
Seamless multimodal access
The expanded station remains closely integrated with other transportation options in the area—including pedestrian bridges, e-scooter zones, and bicycle access. Climate-controlled walkways to Dubai Mall and surrounding developments will continue to offer comfortable connectivity.
Commercial and design improvements
The upgraded station will include enhanced landscaping and new retail zones. Planners will keep the seashell design and add sustainable, commuter-friendly upgrades.
For residents and tourists
Passengers at Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall metro expansion will enjoy a smoother ride after the upgrade. Red Line commuters from Dubai Marina or Business Bay will enjoy shorter waits and a more comfortable station. Tourists visiting Dubai Mall or Burj Khalifa will navigate the expanded station more easily, even in peak seasons.
Ongoing operations and timeline
RTA will expand in phases to limit metro disruption and share early updates via official channels.
In the meantime, transport authorities advise passengers to plan their journeys with slight flexibility and stay updated on station developments.
Supporting Dubai’s future transport vision
This move aligns with RTA’s long-term strategy to future-proof Dubai’s transport infrastructure and offer high-capacity, user-friendly public transit. It is also a key element of the wider urban development goals under Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
The upgraded metro station will play a crucial role in absorbing increasing ridership and supporting Dubai’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
