Abu Dhabi is abuzz with excitement as the BAPS Hindu temple is all set to open its doors to the public starting March 1st, 2024. After a splendid inauguration on February 14th, marking the Middle East’s first traditional Hindu stone temple, locals and tourists alike are eager to explore this architectural gem.
A Marvel of Craftsmanship
Crafted over four years with painstaking attention to detail, the temple stands tall in Abu Dhabi’s Abu Mureikha area. Artisans from India and the UAE have poured their expertise into the construction, using pink sandstone and white marble to create a structure that spans 27 acres of land. Seven majestic spires adorn the temple, each representing one of the emirates.
Open to All
Managed by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, known for its supervision of temple constructions worldwide, this landmark welcomes visitors of all faiths. Intricately designed with 2,000 artisans carving 5,500 tonnes of marble and 14,500 tonnes of sandstone, the temple is a sight to behold, reflecting both religious reverence and architectural brilliance.
Ancient Techniques, Timeless Beauty
What sets this temple apart is its adherence to ancient construction methods. Instead of modern materials like steel or concrete, the temple relies on a layered compression technique. With granite forming the base, followed by sandstone and marble, the structure stands firm at 32 meters high, boasting over 200 ornate pillars.
Embracing Unity and Diversity
Strategically located off Sheikh Zayed Road, the temple complex covers 5.4 hectares of land generously donated by H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2015. Alongside the main temple, the complex features two domes, parks, a community hall, a visitors’ center, and various amenities, inviting people to immerse themselves in its spiritual ambiance.
Celebrating Harmony
The public opening coincides with the ‘Festival of Harmony,’ emphasizing the UAE’s commitment to cultural diversity and inclusivity. Visitors can expect a week of festivities and cultural programs, symbolizing the harmonious bond between the UAE and the Indian community.
