Abu Dhabi is stepping into a new cultural moment as Arabic Opera Antar and Abla finally open to the public this weekend. The production runs from December 12 to 14 at the International Tennis Centre in Zayed Sports City, giving residents and visitors a rare chance to watch a full Arabic opera performed on a grand stage.
It’s a first for the capital. More importantly, the timing fits perfectly with the UAE’s Year of Community, a national theme designed to bring people together through shared experiences. Instead of feeling distant or formal, the opera has been created for everyone—from long-time arts lovers to families curious about trying something new.
A Timeless Love Story Recreated for a Modern Audience

The tale of Antar and Abla is one that many across the region grew up hearing. The story follows Antarah ibn Shaddad, the warrior-poet known for his loyalty and courage, and his love for Abla, whose name still symbolises beauty and devotion in Arab history. For generations, the story has lived through poetry and folklore. Now, it steps into the spotlight as a full-stage opera.
But this isn’t a traditional production. The team behind the project gave the story a modern lift, blending movement, visuals and music to create something that feels cinematic. The International Tennis Centre was completely rebuilt in just 10 days, turning a familiar sporting venue into a custom-designed performance arena. A 300-square-metre stage sits at the centre, framed by huge LED screens that bring every scene to life.
It’s a style that fits the UAE’s growing cultural identity—rooted in heritage, but comfortable using new creative tools to reach wider audiences.
Music, Scale and Storytelling Come Together

A major part of the opera’s appeal comes from its musical score. The Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra leads the performance with a rich, textured sound that carries the story across scenes. The orchestra moves closely with the performers, blending live music, choreography and visuals into one continuous flow.
Guests who attended the preview night described the show as “bigger than expected.” The lighting, projections, and film-style design immerse the audience in the world of Antar and Abla while preserving the story’s original essence.
Productions of this scale are still rare in the region, especially those presented in Arabic. It signals how the UAE continues to expand its cultural footprint—something seen across Abu Dhabi in recent years, from new museum openings to wider community-focused festivals.
The opera’s modern approach also makes it easy for first-time attendees. The production uses clear visuals and accessible storytelling to invite viewers into the story, rather than expecting genre understanding.
A Cultural Celebration for the ‘Year of Community’
Launching the opera during the UAE’s Year of Community gives the show a meaningful purpose. Culture often brings people together, and Antar and Abla is designed exactly for that—an open, inclusive event built around a story that generations across the region know well.
Imane Alsalem Tlamid, CEO of Bidaya—the company behind the project—shared why this production matters now.
She said the story of Antar remains a reflection of values considered central to Arab culture: bravery, loyalty and honour. Presenting it through a modern creative lens keeps these values alive while making them relatable to today’s audience.
Weekend chill and thrill
What makes Arabic Opera Antar and Abla stand out is accessibility. Tickets are complimentary, available online or directly at the venue. This opens the doors for many who may not have considered attending an opera before.
Here’s what visitors can expect:

- Comfortable entry for new audiences: The format is easy to follow, even for those attending opera for the first time.
- A community atmosphere: Families, students and culture lovers all share the same space, giving the event a relaxed energy.
