This 12-day event, held since 1946, showcases the best films of the year and features a highly-esteemed jury that determines the winners of various awards, including the coveted Palme d’Or (highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival).
The festival’s official competition takes place in the iconic Palais des Festivals, the heart of the event that attracts global attention during the opening ceremony and Palme d’Or presentation. In addition to the official selection, there are other highly-regarded sections such as the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors’ Fortnight), Un Certain Regard (highlights bold and innovative films), and La Semaine de la Critique (International Critics’ Week), as well as the highly-anticipated Marché du Film (Cannes Film Market).
One of the festival’s most notable traditions is the walk up the famous red carpet-covered steps, which film personalities take before each screening. Walking up the 24 steps is considered a great honour and privilege for those in the film industry. The Cannes Film Festival truly stands as a testament to the art and power of cinema, and its influence on the world of entertainment will undoubtedly continue for many years to come.
