Anurag Kashyap is a maverick director renowned for his gritty, realistic, and often dark narratives that challenge Bollywood conventions. His films, such as the epic “Gangs of Wasseypur,” are known for their raw portrayal of societal issues, complex characters, and non-linear storytelling. Kashyap’s exceptional talent lies in his unflinching commitment to authenticity and his ability to push cinematic boundaries. Imagine: his cinematic brilliance combined with Shah Rukh Khan’s mass appeal! While this has been a dream for many to see the actor-director combo together, it remains unfulfilled to date.
Recently, Anurag spilled the beans on why this much-anticipated collaboration hasn’t happened, and it’s all about the fans!
Anurag Kashyap’s Love for SRK’s Films
In a candid chat with Humans of Cinema, Anurag Kashyap was asked why he hasn’t yet joined forces with SRK. He gushed, “My favorite Shah Rukh Khan film is ‘Chak De India’. Also, ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’. Early in his career, SRK worked with everyone. But making a film with him now? It’s nearly impossible.”
Why the hesitation? Anurag didn’t hold back. He share, “I aspired it once and I like him a lot, but I am very scared of fans now. In this day and age of social media, I am terrified by the fanbases big stars have. Actors get typecast because of fans, and the fans want the same things from them again and again. If that doesn’t happen fans reject it, so even actors get apprehensive about trying new things.”
The filmmaker added, “Hence I am scared because I will make the film I want to and not just cater to the fans. The repercussions or consequences of what happens then can cost you a lot. So it’s not in my capacity to cater to SRK’s aura or enigma. If his film Fan would have worked, I could have said that I too have the courage to work with him.”
What’s Next for Anurag?
While a Kashyap-Khan collaboration remains a distant dream, Anurag is keeping busy. He’s making his debut in Malayalam cinema as an actor, sharing the screen with Bobby Deol, Sanya Malhotra, Sapna Pabbi, Riddhi Sen, Ankush Gedam, and Nagesh Bhonsle. Plus, he’s gearing up for ‘Bad Cop’ with Gulshan Devaiah.
Anurag Kashyap’s candid reflections on working with Shah Rukh Khan highlight the complex dynamics of stardom and fan expectations in today’s digital age. While we may not see them collaborating anytime soon, the mutual respect and admiration between these two Bollywood giants remain undeniable.
