Anurag Kashyap, the man who gave us cult classics like Dev D and the iconic Gangs of Wasseypur, is known for his raw, unfiltered takes – both on screen and off. He doesn’t do sugarcoating, and that’s what makes him a gem in Indian cinema. Kashyap just dropped a bombshell about Bollywood’s mindset, and he’s not impressed.
Anurag Kashyap is Reveals He Is Disappointed by Bollywood
In an unfiltered chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Kashyap shared on why he’s done with Bollywood’s obsession with playing it safe. ““Right from the beginning, before the film starts, it becomes about how do we sell it. So the joy of filmmaking is sucked out,” he revealed, leaving no room for misinterpretation.
He’s packing his bags and heading south. “That’s why I want to move out. Literally, next year I am moving out of Mumbai. I am going to the South. Because I want to go where there is stimulation. Otherwise, I will die out as an old man,” the filmmaker declared, making it clear that he craves creativity, not just commerce.
Anurag calls out the remakes made in Bollywood
Kashyap didn’t mince words when calling out the industry’s obsession with remakes. “I am so disappointed by my own industry. Not just disappointed, I am disgusted by the mindset that’s here. A script like Manjummel Boys would never be made in Hindi. But when the film becomes a hit, definitely a Hindi filmmaker or producer will say, ‘Let’s remake it.’ The next day they will call me and ask, ‘You know the filmmaker? Can we get the remake rights?’ This is the mindset here,” he said, dripping with frustration.
His disgust with the industry’s refusal to embrace fresh ideas is palpable. According to him, Bollywood doesn’t just fear risks it actively avoids them unless there’s a reference point. He shares, “Let’s just remake what’s already worked. But they don’t understand anything and will not try anything new which does not have a reference point. I’m so disgusted.”
Star culture – a problem in Bollywood?
Anurag took a dig at Bollywood’s obsession with star treatment. “When streaming platforms came in and they wanted to make their presence felt, they brought in their whole American way of working. So now, what is wrong is, everybody expects to be treated like a star. Otherwise, they feel disrespected,” he said, rolling his eyes metaphorically.
“Half the problem with this industry is they feel disrespected if they aren’t welcomed or ushered in or they are not given their things. Nobody makes films, Kashyap concluded, with a sigh that we could almost hear through the screen.
If Bollywood doesn’t take this wake-up call seriously, it risks losing one of its most fearless creators. Anurag Kashyap’s decision to embrace southern cinema might just be what he needs to keep his fire alive.
