Air Kerala Prepares for Launch, Eyes UAE Expansion by 2026

Bridging Kerala and UAE with Affordable Air Travel

Air Kerala, a new airline, founded by UAE-based entrepreneurs Afi Ahmed and Ayub Kallada, is set to debut in early 2025, aiming to provide affordable air travel options for travelers in Kerala and beyond. It recently secured a crucial no-objection certificate (NOC) from India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, marking a significant milestone.

Bridging Gaps: Serving Kerala and the UAE

Air Kerala plans to start with domestic routes using three fuel-efficient ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft. These planes are perfect for shorter regional flights, fitting into the airline’s strategy of providing budget-friendly travel within India. Ahmed and Kallada, with strong ties to both India and the UAE, aim to directly connect Kerala’s large expatriate community in Dubai and other Emirates with their home state.

Vision and Market Positioning

With a focus on affordability, Air Kerala aims to meet the rising demand for economical air travel, especially among Kerala’s travelers. By positioning itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC), the airline intends to compete with established players and other newcomers eyeing India’s burgeoning aviation sector.

Overcoming Challenges: Regulatory Steps and Operational Plans

While obtaining the NOC is a significant achievement, Air Kerala faces several hurdles before it can begin operations. These include securing the Air Operator Permit (AOP), finalizing aircraft leases, and establishing operational infrastructure. Negotiating international flight rights with UAE aviation authorities is crucial for the airline’s plans to launch direct flights between Kerala and Dubai.

Growth Prospects in India-UAE Aviation

Firstly, India’s aviation sector has seen rapid growth, driven by increasing domestic and international travel. The UAE, a major transit hub for Indian travelers, presents a lucrative market for direct flights. Air Kerala’s ULCC model aims to offer a cost-effective alternative to carriers like Emirates and Etihad Airways, potentially reshaping travel dynamics between the two countries.
