Starting today, Abu Dhabi is changing how people pay for bus rides. They’re making it simpler and fairer for everyone. Here’s what you need to know:
What’s Changing?
Now, when you hop on a bus, you’ll pay a fixed fee of Dh2 to get on, plus a little extra for each kilometer you travel. The most you’ll ever pay for a ride is Dh5, no matter how far you go. This makes it easier to figure out how much your ride will cost.

Switching Buses Is Easier
If you need to switch to another bus to reach your destination, you won’t have to pay again as long as you do it within 60 minutes of getting off the first bus. You can switch up to two times using three buses total. Just remember, you can’t switch in the opposite direction of where you’re headed.
How to Pay
When you get on and off each bus, make sure to tap your ‘Hafilat’ card on the reader. This helps make sure you’re charged the right amount. If you forget to tap, you might get fined or charged for the entire route when you use the card next. So, don’t forget!
Abu Dhabi: Public Transport Passes
Now, you can get passes that cover more areas, including parts of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. There are two types of passes:
- 7-day pass: Costs Dh35
- 30-day pass: Costs Dh95
These passes let you ride as much as you want within the time period you choose, making it cheaper if you ride the bus often.
Special Deals for Some People
If you’re a senior citizen, a person with disabilities, or a student, you might get a free or discounted pass. Also, if your family has a low income and gets help from the government, you can get cheaper passes too:
- 7-day pass: Costs Dh30
- 30-day pass: Costs Dh80
This makes it easier for everyone to get around, no matter their budget.
These changes aim to make riding the bus in Abu Dhabi simpler and fairer for everyone. So, if you’re planning to ride the bus, make sure to get your pass, and don’t forget to tap when you get on and off!
