Abu Dhabi Unveils Two New Bridges to Slash Morning Commute Delays

Two newly inaugurated bridges in Abu Dhabi aim to cut travel delays by up to 80%, revolutionizing daily commutes.

Residents in Abu Dhabi can now look forward to a smoother and faster daily commute. Two newly inaugurated bridges, developed as part of a major infrastructure initiative, aim to reduce traffic congestion during peak morning hours significantly. According to the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), these bridges will cut average delays by up to 80%, bringing wait times down to 20 seconds.

Enhanced Connectivity Across Key Routes

The new bridges provide a crucial connection between Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street, improving access to key locations such as Mussafah, Hudayriyat Island, Zayed International Airport, and central Abu Dhabi. This enhanced connectivity is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, easing traffic on major routes and improving overall road safety.

Cutting-Edge Features for Efficiency

The project includes two bridges: a three-lane flyover bridge on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and a two-lane bridge linking Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street to the same road. Combined, the bridges span 742 meters, supported by 12 piers. They accommodate up to 7,500 vehicles per hour, drastically improving the flow of traffic during busy hours.

In addition to their functional design, the bridges are equipped with 61 streetlights, ensuring safe travel even during nighttime. Ramps extending over 990 meters complement the main structure, making the bridges highly accessible for various types of vehicles.

A Greener and Inclusive Infrastructure

The development incorporates modern, sustainable landscaping, with approximately 46,000 square meters of upgraded street greenery. Additionally, the bridges feature dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths, encouraging eco-friendly travel options and making the infrastructure inclusive for non-motorized commuters.

Supporting Vision of Abu Dhabi

The DMT has emphasized that these bridges are part of Abu Dhabi’s broader vision of creating a seamless, connected, and sustainable city. This AED315 million project underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing transport safety, reducing commute times, and protecting the environment while catering to the growing needs of its residents.

A Future-Ready Abu Dhabi

The bridges mark just one step in Abu Dhabi’s extensive plans to expand its infrastructure to support the city’s rapid economic growth. Upcoming developments, such as a new underpass, are also in the pipeline to further enhance connectivity and ensure that the city’s transport network remains efficient and reliable for years.
