Abu Dhabi Extends Maternity Leave for Women in Private Sector to 90 Days

A Big Win for Working Mothers

Abu Dhabi has taken a significant step to support working mothers by extending maternity leave for Emirati women in the private sector to 90 days. This move is part of the Emirate’s broader strategy to enhance family life and ensure that mothers have the time they need to care for their newborns.

Why This Change is Important

This extension is not just about adding more days off. It’s about recognizing the challenges that working mothers face and giving them the support they need. Previously, mothers in the private sector only had 45 days of paid leave, which many found insufficient. With this new policy, they now have three full months to bond with and care for their newborns without worrying about their job security or financial stability.

Key Details You Should Know

If you’re an Emirati mother working in the private sector, here’s what you need to know:

  • Eligibility: The extended leave applies to Emirati mothers who work in the private sector and have a family book issued in Abu Dhabi.
  • How to Apply: You need to apply for this support within 30 days after your child is born. Make sure your child’s birth date is on or after September 1, 2024.
  • Requirements: You’ll need to submit a valid salary certificate, your bank account details, and a no-objection certificate from your employer.

This policy is part of the Emirati Family Growth Support Programme, helping mothers better balance work and family life.

Collaboration with Private Sector

The success of this initiative will depend on the cooperation of private companies. The Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority (SSA) encourages private-sector employers to adopt this program voluntarily. This is about creating a workplace that truly supports employee well-being, not just ticking a corporate responsibility box.

What This Means for Families

For families, this is a huge relief. The extra time allows mothers to focus on their newborns during those crucial first months without the added pressure of returning to work too soon. It’s a step toward creating a more family-friendly work environment and supporting the long-term health and stability of Emirati families.

Abu Dhabi’s move to extend maternity leave to 90 days in the private sector highlights the government’s commitment to supporting families. This policy not only helps working mothers but also contributes to a healthier, more balanced community where families can thrive.
