Luxury travel in the Gulf is entering a new chapter. Saudi Arabia’s much-talked-about Dream of the Desert train project has officially opened its headquarters in Riyadh, bringing the Kingdom one step closer to launching its first ultra-luxury rail experience in 2026.
Across the UAE, travellers are already familiar with lavish hotels, desert resorts, and curated tourism experiences. But this project feels different. Instead of flying from one destination to another, Dream of the Desert is designed to slow the journey down — turning the train ride itself into the main attraction.
For anyone who has driven through the endless desert roads between GCC cities, the idea instantly makes sense. Wide open landscapes, golden dunes at sunset, quiet stretches of untouched scenery — Saudi Arabia is now packaging that experience into a moving luxury hotel on rails.
A luxury train inspired by Arabian hospitality
The project is being developed through a partnership between Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Italy’s Arsenale Group, a company known for luxury hospitality experiences.
The newly opened Riyadh headquarters will oversee operations as the train moves toward its planned 2026 debut. While construction and preparations continue behind the scenes, the project is already becoming one of the region’s standout tourism developments.
Unlike a standard railway service, Dream of the Desert is being built as an immersive travel experience. Early visuals reveal interiors filled with warm earthy tones, elegant textures, and design details inspired by traditional Saudi architecture. Think boutique hotel meets desert majlis — but moving across vast landscapes.
The train is expected to feature around 40 high-end cabins and suites, along with luxury dining spaces, lounges, and hospitality services that showcase Saudi culture in a more modern and refined way.

The journey is expected to be the real attraction
In many parts of the world, luxury trains are less about transport and more about storytelling. That same idea appears to sit at the centre of Dream of the Desert.
Passengers are expected to travel along Saudi Arabia’s Northern Railway network, passing through dramatic desert scenery and cultural locations that many international tourists have never properly experienced before.
There is something naturally cinematic about desert travel in this region. The quietness. The changing colours of the sand. Small towns appearing unexpectedly in the distance. Saudi Arabia seems ready to turn those moments into a premium tourism product.

Travellers onboard can expect:
- Private luxury suites
- Fine dining experiences inspired by regional flavours
- Lounge and relaxation areas
- Panoramic windows overlooking desert landscapes
- Curated cultural experiences
- High-end personalised hospitality
For GCC travellers, especially UAE residents who regularly look for quick luxury escapes, the project could easily become a future bucket-list experience.
Saudi Arabia is rapidly reshaping regional tourism
Over the last few years, Saudi Arabia’s tourism ambitions have become impossible to ignore. Massive projects like NEOM, The Red Sea destination, Diriyah Gate, and new entertainment zones have completely changed global perceptions of the Kingdom.
Now, the country is moving into experiential tourism — the kind of travel where the journey feels just as memorable as the destination itself.
That shift is something Dubai travellers understand well. Across the UAE, people are increasingly choosing experiences over traditional holidays. Desert glamping retreats, wellness resorts, private island stays, and scenic train journeys abroad have all grown in popularity.
Dream of the Desert fits directly into that trend.
The project also reflects the growing competition within Gulf tourism. While Dubai remains a global leader in luxury hospitality, Saudi Arabia is rapidly creating new attractions that offer something different from the usual city-based travel experience.
Riyadh is becoming more than just a business capital
The opening of the headquarters in Riyadh also highlights how much the Saudi capital has transformed in recent years.
Once seen mainly as a government and business hub, Riyadh is now developing into a lifestyle destination filled with new restaurants, entertainment districts, hotels, and cultural attractions. Visitors arriving today often find a city that feels far more energetic and international than expected.
The luxury train project adds another layer to that transformation.
For Saudi Arabia, rail tourism also carries long-term economic value. Luxury travel attracts high-spending visitors, creates hospitality jobs, and encourages tourists to spend more time exploring multiple regions instead of flying in and out quickly.

Launch preparations continue for 2026
While the final launch date has not yet been confirmed, Dream of the Desert is expected to welcome its first passengers in 2026.
The opening of the Riyadh headquarters signals that the project is steadily moving from concept to reality. And once operational, it could become one of the Middle East’s most unique travel experiences.
For travellers across Dubai and the UAE, it may soon offer an entirely new way to experience Saudi Arabia — not through airports and fast itineraries, but through slower journeys, dramatic desert views, and luxury hospitality designed around the spirit of the region.
