UAE Summer 2025: Longest Day of the Year Set for June 21

With the heat steadily building across the Emirates, many residents are wondering whether summer has officially started. While temperatures may already feel extreme, the astronomical start of summer is marked by the summer solstice, which falls on June 21, 2025.

This annual event signals the longest day and shortest night of the year in the UAE and occurs when the sun reaches its highest and northernmost point in the sky. From this point forward, summer conditions will intensify and continue until the autumnal equinox in late September.

UAE’s Longest Day of the Year

Between June 18 and 24, residents will experience the year’s longest daylight hours, with the sun shining for up to 13 hours and 43 minutes each day. According to local astronomical experts, this extended daylight leads to higher overall heat retention, especially in built-up areas.

While the summer solstice doesn’t immediately translate into the hottest temperatures, it does mark the start of a phase where the region will begin to see sustained heat and extreme weather conditions.

The First Half of Summer: Hot Days and Dry Winds

The period from June 21 to August 10 is typically the most intense part of summer in the UAE. During this phase, average daytime temperatures are expected to range between 41°C and 43°C, with nights cooling down only slightly to 26°C–29°C.

Hot air masses often move through the region during this time, pushing temperatures 3°C or more above seasonal norms. In some parts of the country, thermometers may even cross the 50°C mark, particularly in interior and desert areas.

These extreme temperatures are commonly accompanied by dry winds and dusty conditions, further reducing visibility and outdoor comfort.

The Second Half of Summer: Rising Humidity Levels

From August 11 to September 23, temperatures remain high but a noticeable shift occurs in terms of humidity. Moist air begins to push in from coastal areas, making the air feel heavier and more uncomfortable.

This second half of the season is particularly tough for residents in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where the combination of high humidity and heat can result in oppressive conditions. Even with slightly shorter days, the lingering heat after sunset remains a challenge.

A Hot Start to the Year Sets the Tone

Weather specialists have already noted that April 2025 was one of the hottest Aprils recorded in the past decade, with minimal rainfall and early onset of dry conditions. This early spike in temperatures may lead to a more prolonged and intense summer compared to previous years.

How to Stay Safe in the Heat

With the peak of summer fast approaching, health and weather authorities advise residents to follow some key precautions to beat the heat:

  • Stay hydrated: Carry water at all times and avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks
  • Dress appropriately: Wear light-coloured, breathable clothing
  • Limit sun exposure: Avoid staying outdoors during peak hours, typically from 12 pm to 3 pm
  • Use protective gear: Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen can reduce the impact of direct sun
  • Ventilate indoor spaces: Ensure rooms and vehicles are properly cooled and ventilated

Employers are also reminded to adhere to midday break rules for outdoor workers to prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure safety during the summer months.

When Will Relief Arrive?

The UAE’s summer season typically concludes around the autumnal equinox on September 23, after which temperatures gradually begin to ease. However, those living in coastal areas may continue to feel the effects of humidity well into October.

Inland regions usually experience a quicker cooldown, offering some early relief from the months-long heat.

The arrival of UAE summer 2025 on June 21 marks more than just a date on the calendar—it sets the tone for three months of high temperatures, long days, and humidity. With proper precautions and awareness, residents can manage the heat and make the most of the season ahead.
