RTA Cracks Down on Trailer Safety with Massive Inspection Blitz Across Dubai

Over 2,600 trailer inspections across Dubai reveal major faults, with RTA pushing for safer, compliant roads in 2025.

Dubai’s roads are some of the busiest in the region, especially with the constant movement of heavy vehicles carrying goods across the emirate. But while most drivers might focus on the fast lanes and smooth commutes, what’s happening behind the scenes—quite literally at the back of trailers—is just as critical to road safety.

To address mounting safety concerns and prevent accidents involving trailers and semi-trailers, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched a powerful new campaign in early 2025. Under the banner “Trailer Safety,” the initiative kicked off as part of RTA’s annual plan to inspect heavy vehicles, raise compliance awareness, and reinforce its mission of becoming a global leader in sustainable and seamless mobility.

Over 2,600 Inspections, 134 Faults Found

The first quarter of the year saw a total of 2,638 field inspections across six key locations in Dubai, particularly along high-traffic corridors such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.

Out of those inspections, 177 trailers were examined in detail for compliance with technical and safety standards. The findings were eye-opening:

  • 134 technical faults were identified
  • 88 violations were issued

These weren’t minor oversights. The violations involved serious safety hazards, including:

  • Unroadworthy or worn-out tyres
  • Faulty brake systems
  • Broken or missing rear and side lighting
  • Absence of mandatory reflective stickers
  • Improper or dangerously loaded cargo

These issues, if left unchecked, pose a serious threat not just to trailer drivers, but to every other motorist sharing the road.

A Preventive Approach to Save Lives

Speaking about the campaign, Ahmed Mahboob, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency, emphasized the authority’s commitment to raising awareness and enforcing safety standards in the heavy vehicle sector.

“The RTA is committed to conducting regular inspection campaigns across various sectors, with a particular focus on road transport, to ensure the highest levels of road safety,” said Mahboob.

He noted that this campaign isn’t a one-off effort. It’s embedded into RTA’s long-term strategy to reduce accidents and technical failures caused by neglect, especially within the freight transport industry.

Addressing a Hidden Danger on Dubai Roads

While Dubai’s road safety campaigns often focus on reckless driving or speeding, trailers often fly under the radar—until something goes wrong. Loose cargo, tire blowouts, or brake failures in these massive vehicles can lead to devastating consequences.

That’s why the “Trailer Safety” campaign stands out. It’s not just about catching violators but about highlighting how regular inspections and adherence to technical standards can prevent tragedies. Proper lighting, load distribution, and reflective markings on trailers help prevent night-time accidents, says the RTA.

Aligning with Dubai’s Road Safety Vision

This trailer safety campaign is more than just an enforcement initiative—it reflects a broader vision. Dubai has consistently aimed to become a global benchmark for transportation safety and innovation. This campaign plays directly into that ambition by targeting the often-overlooked risks posed by unregulated heavy vehicles.

By placing a spotlight on trailer maintenance, the RTA is reinforcing its long-term commitment to minimizing preventable road incidents and improving vehicle performance standards across the board. The inspections also support Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan by contributing to a smarter, safer, and more resilient transport infrastructure.

Raising Awareness Among Transport Operators

In addition to field checks, the RTA’s Licensing Activities Monitoring Department is working to educate heavy vehicle operators and logistics firms about the importance of adhering to licensing laws and technical safety standards.

According to Mahboob, the campaign is also a communication tool. It warns transport companies that safety must be a top priority, with no room for negligence.

Some of the key focus areas include:

  • Ensuring valid driver permits and licenses
  • Regular vehicle maintenance, especially of tyres, brakes, and lighting
  • Awareness about safe loading practices and legal cargo limits
  • Installation of required reflective materials for visibility

This dual approach—inspections combined with education—is designed to drive long-term change and foster a culture of compliance rather than fear of penalties.

Important for Every Road User

Trailer-related accidents are often more severe due to the size and load of the vehicle involved. A small malfunction can escalate into a major accident that endangers many lives. That’s why even those not directly connected to the freight or logistics sector should care about these inspections.

The success of such campaigns doesn’t just depend on enforcement agencies. It requires shared responsibility across the transportation ecosystem—including logistics companies, drivers, manufacturers, and even consumers who demand fast, efficient delivery services that rely on trailers.

By tackling faults before they cause damage, the RTA is playing a proactive role in ensuring Dubai’s roads remain safe for everyone.

rTA : What Comes Next?

The “Trailer Safety” campaign is just one part of the RTA’s broader strategy. More inspections are expected throughout 2025, covering a wider range of commercial transport sectors. The campaign also paves the way for enhanced digital monitoring, smart inspection systems, and integrated transport policies designed to ensure every vehicle on Dubai roads meets the highest safety benchmarks.

As Dubai continues to grow as a logistics and trade hub, campaigns like this are crucial in maintaining the balance between efficiency and safety.

Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Road safety begins with compliance, including proper maintenance and licensing of trailers. The first-quarter inspection results serve as a wake-up call for businesses and operators.

By holding heavy vehicle operators accountable, raising public awareness, and maintaining rigorous field inspections, Dubai continues to set the standard for road safety across the region.
