Saudi Arabia is transforming the way drivers experience major roads across the country. The Roads General Authority (RGA) has rolled out redesigned road signs that not only enhance readability but also showcase the Kingdom’s rich cultural identity. This initiative aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to create a more engaging, efficient, and safe transportation experience.
The new signage reflects a national effort to modernize infrastructure while celebrating regional heritage, traditional crafts, and local arts that define the Saudi landscape.
Standardized Fonts to Improve Clarity

A major component of the updated road signs is the standardization of fonts. All Arabic text will now use the Naskh font, providing better visibility and consistency across cities. However, in Madinah, road signs will use the culturally significant Madinah font, reflecting the region’s unique identity. English text on guidance signs will adopt the Transport font for uniform readability.
This standardization effort is part of the broader Saudi Highway Code, which will guide both government and private sectors in the implementation of these changes. While the new code remains in a guideline phase throughout 2024, government entities must fully adopt the system by 2025, with private sector implementation starting June 1, 2025.
Introducing ‘Wrth Saudi’ – Art Meets Infrastructure
The ‘Wrth Saudi’ initiative, launched in partnership with the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, is one of the standout features of this new signage approach. This program introduces cultural information signs on key highways, spotlighting the Kingdom’s regional heritage and traditions.
Drivers can now see signs highlighting iconic Saudi crafts and landmarks on major routes like the Riyadh–Dammam Road, the Makkah–Madinah (Hijrah) Road, and the Riyadh–Qassim Road. From intricate Najdi doors to traditional bisht cloaks, each sign tells a story of the region’s craftsmanship and artistic legacy.
This cultural infusion isn’t just decorative—it offers travelers a deeper appreciation for the nation’s identity while navigating the roads.
Enhanced Safety and Environmental Focus
Alongside the cultural elements, the RGA has introduced 25 new regulations covering various aspects of road development, including design, safety, maintenance, and sustainability. These regulations also lay the groundwork for autonomous vehicle integration and environmentally responsible infrastructure.
A key national goal is to reduce road fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people by 2030, making road safety a central part of this transformation.
What It Means for Drivers
With these updates, motorists across Saudi Arabia can expect a more seamless and engaging driving experience. The consistent fonts will make directions easier to read, while the new cultural signs provide an educational layer that brings history and tradition to the roads.
This transformation also supports tourism efforts by introducing visitors to Saudi heritage during their travels, creating a more immersive and informative journey through the Kingdom.
Supporting Vision 2030 Through Roads
This move is part of a wider push to improve public services and infrastructure under Vision 2030, a strategic framework aimed at diversifying the Saudi economy and enhancing quality of life.
By modernizing signage and integrating cultural elements, the Kingdom not only elevates road safety and design but also promotes its history and regional identities to the world.
Saudi Arabia’s updated road signs mark more than just a change in design—they represent a thoughtful blend of function, culture, and national pride. Whether you’re a daily commuter or a traveler discovering the Kingdom, these signs offer a clearer, safer, and richer experience on the road.
