In a major policy change, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has made Physical Education (PE) a mandatory part of the school curriculum. This move ensures that all students participate in structured physical activities under the supervision of qualified instructors.
Why This Policy is Necessary
Previously, schools had no standardized PE curriculum, and students could easily opt out of physical activities with a simple note from their parents. Many students, especially girls, skipped PE due to personal comfort or social norms. The new policy eliminates this loophole, making physical education an essential part of the school day.
Structured PE for Every Student

Under the new guidelines, all schools must implement a structured PE program that aligns with a physical literacy framework. This ensures that students engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. Additionally, only qualified PE teachers will be allowed to lead these sessions, replacing the previous practice of unqualified coaches handling PE classes.
Alternative Options for Students
ADEK recognizes that some students may feel uncomfortable participating in mixed-gender PE classes or certain sports. To address this, schools must provide alternative sports or accommodations. This could include separate PE sessions for boys and girls, privacy screens, or switching to different physical activities that align with students’ preferences.
Implementation and Compliance
The policy will be fully implemented by September 2026. Schools that fail to comply may face penalties, ensuring that every institution takes this initiative seriously. This structured approach aims to promote a healthier lifestyle among students and encourage lifelong fitness habits.
Tackling Rising Health Concerns
The new PE policy comes at a crucial time, as health concerns among UAE students continue to rise. Studies show that a significant percentage of children in the country lead sedentary lifestyles, consume unhealthy diets, and are at risk of obesity. By making PE mandatory, ADEK hopes to instill better fitness habits in students from a young age.
A Unified Curriculum Across Schools
Abu Dhabi has schools following different international curricula, each with its own approach to PE. The new policy standardizes physical education across all schools, ensuring every student receives equal opportunities to engage in fitness activities, regardless of their school’s educational board.
ADEK’s decision to make PE mandatory is a step in the right direction. By prioritizing students’ physical health, the initiative aims to create a healthier, more active generation. With structured physical education, alternative sports options, and a standardized approach, students will benefit both physically and mentally, leading to improved academic performance and overall well-being.
