Riyadh’s New Metro Station Blends Tradition and Modernity

Riyadh has unveiled the Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station, a significant addition to the city’s transportation network. “This station, open since 6 a.m. on February 26, 2025, is a vital hub connecting the Blue and Orange Lines of the Riyadh Metro.

Architectural Marvel in the Heart of the City

Located in the Al-Qiri district, just south of the historic Qasr Al-Hokm area, the station spans 20,000 square meters and reaches a depth of 40 meters. Its design seamlessly blends traditional and modern elements, featuring a 70-meter diameter stainless steel cone-shaped roof that acts as a periscope, reflecting images of the surrounding historic sites into the station’s interior. This architectural choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of Riyadh.

Enhancing Urban Mobility

The Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station strategically serves key government institutions, palaces, historical sites, markets, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods in the heart of Riyadh. The station connects the Blue and Orange lines to bus services, improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion.

Riyadh Metro: A Transformative Project

The Riyadh Metro project, inaugurated in December 2024, encompasses six lines with 85 stations, covering a total of 176 kilometers. This ambitious project aims to meet the demands of Riyadh’s growing population, expected to reach 8 million by 2030. The driverless metro system transports 3.6 million passengers daily, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, there are plans to expand the Riyadh Metro network further. Developers plan Line 7 to connect King Khalid International Airport to Qiddiya, passing through Misk City, New Murabba, Diriyah, and King Abdullah International Gardens. Planners aim to extend Line 2 to King Saud University’s west side, the Diplomatic Quarter, and Diriyah, with some stations already in progress.

A Commitment to Sustainable Urban Development

The opening of the Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station underscores Riyadh’s dedication to sustainable urban development. By investing in modern infrastructure that respects its historical roots, Riyadh is creating a future where tradition and progress coexist. This approach improves residents’ quality of life and positions the city as a regional model for urban development.
