Abu Dhabi has officially stepped into the future with the launch of self-driving Ubers, making it the first city outside the U.S. to experience this cutting-edge technology. Introduced in partnership with WeRide, a global leader in autonomous vehicle systems, this service is a bold move toward smarter, greener, and more efficient transportation.
Where Can You Take a Ride?
Residents and visitors can enjoy this futuristic service on select routes, including Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and Zayed International Airport. These high-demand areas ensure convenience for commuters and tourists, especially during major events like the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Although the service is currently limited to these areas, plans are in motion to expand its reach throughout the capital by 2025, making it an integral part of Abu Dhabi’s transportation network.
How to Book Your Autonomous Ride
Booking a self-driving Uber is simple. Riders can choose WeRide autonomous vehicles under the UberX or Uber Comfort categories when scheduling their trips through the Uber app.
For added safety during this initial phase, a trained safety operator will accompany every ride, ensuring the well-being of passengers and pedestrians alike.
Transforming Urban Mobility
This initiative is more than a technological marvel—it’s a step toward a sustainable future. Autonomous vehicles optimize energy use and reduce emissions, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s environmental goals.
Dr. Abdulla Al Ghafli, acting director-general of the Integrated Transport Centre, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “These smart solutions will enhance the quality of life and contribute significantly to sustainability while making transportation more efficient.”
What Makes WeRide Special?
WeRide brings a wealth of expertise, boasting over 1,800 days of public operational testing in various urban settings. This robust experience ensures the highest safety standards, setting the stage for a seamless integration into Abu Dhabi’s transport landscape.
What’s Next for Abu Dhabi?
The launch of self-driving Ubers is only the beginning. This is the first phase of a larger vision to introduce fully driverless, commercially viable services by late 2025. As the program evolves, more areas in Abu Dhabi will access this innovative service, paving the way for smarter cities.
