Dubai Residents Push for Flexible Work Hours as Salik and Parking Fees Rise

Dubai commuters are raising their voices for flexible work schedules as the city gears up for an increase in Salik tolls and parking fees early next year. The move, aimed at reducing road congestion, is sparking conversations about the financial strain it may bring and how remote work options can provide much-needed relief.

Commuters Share Their Concerns

The rising cost of commuting has left many residents searching for solutions. Michael da Costa, a long-time resident and PR professional, emphasized that increasing tolls might not effectively address congestion. “We need more comprehensive strategies like flexible work arrangements to truly make a difference,” he shared.

Similarly, Richelle Fosberry, head of operations at Mojo PR, highlighted the benefits of remote work. “Working from home even a couple of days a week can reduce my commute costs and save time,” she said. These sentiments reflect the growing demand for hybrid work models across Dubai.

Survey Results Highlight Support for Remote Work

A recent survey by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed that:

  • 87% of government employees feel flexible hours align with their needs.
  • 80.4% report similar productivity levels when working remotely compared to office-based work.

Private sector participation is also increasing, with 32% of companies currently offering remote work options and 58% showing readiness to adopt flexible policies further.

Authorities noted that implementing flexible schedules, such as staggered start times or a few remote workdays monthly, could significantly reduce peak-hour traffic by 30%.

Challenges in Certain Industries

While flexible work is gaining traction, industries like automotive sales face challenges in adopting such models. Joy S. Distor, an HR executive, stated, “Departments like IT or HR can adapt to remote work, but roles requiring direct interaction must remain on-site.”

Despite these limitations, the pandemic has proven that many operations can run smoothly from home, provided infrastructure like reliable connectivity is in place.

Balancing Costs, Congestion, and Productivity

Dynamic pricing schemes for Salik and parking fees aim to reduce congestion, but experts stress the importance of alternative solutions. Dr. Monica Menendez from NYU Abu Dhabi suggested integrating flexible work hours with enhanced public transportation services to ease the transition.

“Encouraging flexible schedules and increasing public transport availability during peak times can significantly alleviate traffic issues,” she explained.

The Path Forward

As the conversation around flexible work continues, adopting hybrid models and staggered schedules could provide a win-win solution—easing financial burdens for residents while enhancing productivity. Dubai’s public and private sectors are urged to collaborate in creating sustainable solutions that prioritize residents’ quality of life.
